Braces are a method used to control, guide, and adjust the development and growth of dental and facial structures to treat maxillofacial disorders, misaligned bites, improve chewing function, and enhance facial aesthetics—helping patients become more confident in communication. The orthodontic process typically takes an extended period and requires regular check-ups with the dentist.

I. Types of Braces

1. Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces have been used for a long time and are highly regarded for their effectiveness in adjusting tooth positions. This method is generally more affordable compared to some modern orthodontic techniques, making it a popular choice among many patients.

However, traditional metal braces are often considered less aesthetic due to their metallic color and placement on the front of the teeth. Additionally, during the initial phase of treatment, patients may experience discomfort and need time to get used to the brackets and archwires. While treatment duration varies depending on each individual’s condition, this method typically takes about 18–24 months or even longer to achieve the desired results.

2. Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are an advanced version of traditional metal braces. These braces use a built-in clip mechanism instead of elastic bands to hold the archwire in place on the brackets. Thanks to this self-locking system, the archwire can move freely within the bracket slot, allowing for more consistent and gentle force on the teeth.

Self-Ligating Braces Offer Several Advantages:

  • The self-ligating system typically produces less friction compared to traditional methods, reducing the risk of gum irritation and pain.
  • The design includes a clip mechanism that holds the archwire, minimizing food buildup and making oral hygiene easier.
  • It causes less discomfort than traditional braces, providing a more comfortable treatment experience.

This method may deliver more effective results due to reduced friction between the elastic ligatures and the archwire. However, it also has some limitations, such as:

  • Higher treatment costs compared to traditional braces
  • While offering many benefits, self-ligating braces require a larger investment

3. Ceramic Braces or Clear Braces

Ceramic braces or clear braces have the advantage of being made from materials that closely match the color of natural teeth or are transparent, helping reduce visibility and providing a more natural-looking smile.

Clear braces offer higher aesthetic appeal.

However, this method also comes with a higher cost and is prone to staining if proper oral hygiene is not maintained—especially around the bracket areas.

4. Lingual Braces (Braces on the Inner Side)

Lingual braces are a specialized orthodontic method where the brackets are attached to the inner (tongue-facing) side of the teeth. This technique offers high aesthetic appeal since the braces are hidden from view on the back surfaces of the teeth.

Lingual braces have some limitations, such as:

  • This method generally costs more than traditional braces.
  • Brackets placed on the tongue side make it more challenging to observe and maintain oral hygiene.
  • Treatment duration tends to be longer and adjustments more difficult compared to traditional methods.

This technique is often not suitable for severe or complex orthodontic cases.

5. Clear Aligners (Invisible Braces)

Clear aligner treatment offers high aesthetics, making it hard for others to notice you’re undergoing orthodontic correction. Throughout the aligner-wearing process, patients typically feel more comfortable compared to other types of braces. Aligners apply gentler force than bracket-and-wire systems, reducing the risk of discomfort or pain.

Clear aligner orthodontics is currently one of the most popular and preferred methods of teeth straightening.

Clear aligners can be used to treat complex misalignments. Patients must follow instructions carefully and wear the aligners for the recommended amount of time to achieve the best results. This method typically costs more than some traditional orthodontic treatments. Because aligners are removable, they can be lost or damaged, and replacing them may increase overall treatment costs.

II. Important Notes When Getting Braces

Choose a dental clinic with experienced dentists who are professionally trained in general dentistry and orthodontics in particular.

  • Follow the dentist's appointment schedule strictly to ensure effective treatment progress.
  • Clean your teeth daily by brushing and using dental floss. Use alcohol-free mouthwash to keep your mouth clean.
  • Limit sugary foods that can harm your teeth.
  • Regular check-ups with your orthodontist are essential during the course of treatment.
