Invisalign is a type of clear aligner orthodontic treatment developed by Align Technology, a U.S.-based company, since 1999. Today, Invisalign is recognized as the global leader in clear aligner technology — leading the market in innovation, number of users, and treatment effectiveness. Every step, from design to production of the aligners, is carried out using proprietary, patented technology.

I. What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner orthodontic treatment developed by Align Technology, a U.S.-based company, since 1999. Today, Invisalign is recognized as the global leader in clear aligner technology — leading the market in innovation, number of users, and treatment effectiveness. Every step, from design to production of the aligners, is carried out using proprietary, patented technology.

Today, Invisalign has been clinically proven to effectively treat a wide range of orthodontic cases, from simple to complex — including spacing, crowding, deep bite, underbite, open bite, protrusion, and retrusion caused by dental issues. What sets Invisalign apart from other brands is the material used to create its clear aligners. Invisalign aligners are made from a proprietary plastic called SmartTrack — a specially formulated medical-grade thermoplastic with optimal elasticity and firmness, designed to deliver precise, gentle forces when worn. This material is exclusive to Invisalign and has been approved by the FDA as safe for human use.

ClinCheck is proprietary software developed by Align Technology that provides 3D simulations of tooth movements step by step, from the initial position to the final treatment result using aligners.

Invisalign has also built a strong global community of professionals, supported by top orthodontic experts worldwide.

II. Invisalign Treatment Process

Step 1: Initial Examination and Consultation

  • A full dental check-up to assess your oral condition
  • X-rays to identify tooth misalignment and jaw issues
  • Intraoral and facial photography
  • 3D digital scanning of your teeth using an intraoral scanner to preview your post-treatment smile simulation via Invisalign’s proprietary system

Step 2: Treatment Planning

  • Your scan data is used by the doctor to create a treatment plan, which is submitted to Align Technology
  • Through the ClinCheck software, patients can view their personalized treatment plan and receive an estimated treatment timeline. This allows them to discuss and finalize the orthodontic plan with their dentist.

Step 3: Aligner Manufacturing and Fitting

  • Once the plan is approved, your custom aligners are produced and delivered in 2–4 weeks
  • You’ll receive your first set of aligners, along with attachment bonding and instructions on how to wear and switch trays at home
  • Follow-up checkups every 4–8 weeks

During your Invisalign journey, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene and follow your orthodontist’s instructions closely. Regular checkups allow the doctor to monitor the progress and ensure optimal tooth movement.

III. Who Is Invisalign Suitable For?

  • Deep bite: Upper teeth excessively overlap 2/3 the lower teeth.
  • Underbite: Lower teeth extend beyond the upper teeth (often referred to as an underdeveloped upper jaw).
  • Crossbite: Misaligned bite where upper and lower teeth do not match properly.
  • Open bite: Upper and lower front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed — sometimes the tongue is visible when teeth are at rest.
  • Crowded teeth: Teeth are overlapping or misaligned due to lack of space.
  • Spaced teeth (gaps): Noticeable gaps between teeth.
  • Crooked teeth: Teeth grow out of their natural position on the dental arch.
  • Protruding or buck teeth: Teeth or jawbone protrude outward, often affecting aesthetics and bite.

IV. 5 Facts About Invisalign You Might Not Know

1. Treatment Time Is Not Longer Than Braces

Although early opinions suggested clear aligners take longer than traditional braces, over 20 years of clinical data and millions of cases have shown that Invisalign’s gentle, continuous force (designed to match the biological movement of teeth and bone) can actually shorten treatment time in many cases.

2. Suitable for Complex Cases

With over 14 million cases worldwide, Invisalign has proven its ability to handle even complex orthodontic issues like severe crowding, extractions, deep bites, protrusion, and underbites — all while delivering both functional and aesthetic results.

3. Patients Can Switch Aligners at Home

Patients can switch to new aligners at home following their dentist’s instructions, depending on each stage of treatment, however, regular checkups with a qualified orthodontist are essential to monitor progress and quickly address any issues such as poor fit, attachment detachment, or inconsistent wear.

4. High Durability with SmartTrack Material

Invisalign trays are made from exclusive SmartTrack material, developed over 8 years and tested on 206 different plastics. This material provides optimal tooth movement, excellent elasticity, and strength. The aligners are durable under normal use but should be kept away from high temperatures and cleaned with lukewarm water to avoid distortion.

5. Minimal Pain Compared to Braces

Like all orthodontic treatments, Invisalign works by moving teeth, which may cause discomfort. However, Invisalign uses gentle and even force, so patients typically feel little to no pain — just slight pressure or soreness in the first 2–3 days of wearing a new set of aligners.

Pros and Cons of Invisalign

Advantages:

  • Clear aligner treatment is a modern orthodontic solution that allows patients to preview their treatment plan, including the movement and changes of their teeth before, during, and after treatment. This helps patients better understand the method and track their own progress.
  • One of the biggest advantages of clear aligners is their high level of aesthetics. They are virtually invisible when worn, making them suitable for people of all ages and professions. This helps users feel confident in communication and daily life, overcoming feelings of insecurity or self-consciousness.
  • Better oral hygiene: Easy removal for brushing and flossing helps prevent issues like gum disease, plaque buildup, or bad breath.
  • Clear aligners are also user-friendly, allowing for convenient removal and reinsertion. The smooth, high-quality transparent trays are non-irritating and help avoid discomfort, scraping, or poking of the inner cheeks and tongue—issues commonly associated with traditional braces.

Disadvantages

  • Higher cost: Invisalign tends to be more expensive than traditional braces, making it less accessible for some patients.
  • Requires discipline: Since aligners are removable, treatment success depends on patient compliance — wearing them 20–22 hours/day. Lost or broken trays can increase costs and delay progress.
  • Not suitable for all cases: Some conditions may still require traditional braces. An in-person consultation with a qualified provider is essential to determine eligibility.
