5 common dental issues in children

Gingivitis, tooth decay, geographic tongue, mouth ulcers, tongue coating, and pulpitis are some of the most common oral diseases in children. Recognizing early symptoms helps parents take children for timely dental visits, allowing for proper treatment plans to be made.

I. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral diseases in children. It usually results from the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the mouth, causing pain, swelling, or bleeding gums.

Some causes that contribute to gingivitis in children include:

  • Brushing teeth improperly or not brushing at all, leaving plaque buildup that allows bacteria to thrive.
  • Vitamin C deficiency, calcium deficiency, or other nutrient imbalances that affect gum health.

Common symptoms of gingivitis in children:

  • Gums become swollen, red, and painful when touched.
  • Bleeding gums while brushing or eating hard foods.

II. Tooth Decay

Tooth decay in children can cause pain, affect their ability to eat, and even impact their overall health. The causes of tooth decay include:

  • Poor oral hygiene habits: improper brushing creates favorable conditions for bacteria to cause cavities.
  • High consumption of sweets, sugary snacks, or beverages increases the risk of tooth decay.
  • Some children are more genetically prone to cavities.
  • Oral bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, can produce acid that damages tooth enamel.

Common symptoms of tooth decay in children:

  • Children may feel pain or sensitivity when consuming cold water, especially when eating sweets or sugary foods.
  • Visible black spots or holes on the tooth surface.
  • Bad breath or frequent discomfort when chewing.
  • Unpleasant mouth odor is also a typical sign of tooth decay.

Prevention methods for tooth decay in children:

  • Encourage children to brush their teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste and follow professional dental guidance.
  • Limit snacking and sugary foods, and ensure a calcium-rich diet.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups for timely cleaning and monitoring.
  • Use fluoride mouthwash or toothpaste to strengthen tooth enamel.

III. Benign Migratory Glossitis

Geographic tongue is a tongue infection commonly seen in children, usually accompanied by red patches, swelling, and a pattern that resembles a map. Causes of this condition include:

  • Some cases of geographic tongue are caused by fungal infections such as Candida.
  • The condition may be hereditary and passed down from one generation to the next.
  • Allergic reactions to certain foods or substances may also contribute to the development of the condition.

Symptoms of geographic tongue in children:

  • Red patches on the tongue that resemble map-like shapes, which may change in size and location.
  • The tongue may feel sore, especially when eating spicy or hot foods.
  • Bad breath is also a common symptom of this condition.

IV. Mouth Ulcers (Aphthous Stomatitis)

Mouth ulcers, also known as aphthous stomatitis, are one of the most common oral diseases in children. Common causes include:

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a major cause of mouth ulcers in children.
  • Weakened immune system due to illness or stress increases the risk of ulcers.
  • Frequent cheek/lip biting, tongue thrusting, or grinding teeth can also cause ulcers.
  • Certain foods or substances that cause irritation or allergic reactions can trigger ulcers.
  • In some cases, ulcers appear when children are under pressure, teething, or adjusting to a new environment like daycare.

Common symptoms of mouth ulcers: Painful sores in the mouth, redness and swelling around the ulcer, difficulty eating or drinking, bleeding gums, and in severe cases, high fever or fatigue.

V. Oral Thrush (Tongue Coating/White Patches)

Oral thrush is a condition in which the tongue becomes inflamed with red or white patches on the surface. This is one of the most common oral conditions in children, especially in newborns and infants.

Symptoms of oral thrush in children:

  • The tongue appears red and swollen.
  • White or red patches may appear on the tongue's surface.
  • Children may feel pain or burning when eating.
  • Oral thrush can make it difficult for children to eat or speak.

Children’s teeth should not be considered merely smaller versions of adult teeth. Treating and managing pediatric dental care requires a high level of skill and dedication from dentists. In the past, pediatric dental treatment primarily focused on procedures such as treating cavities and extracting baby teeth. However, the trend has now shifted toward preventive care and long-term preservation of children's teeth.

Therefore, parents should take their children to dental clinics early for regular check-ups and professional consultation.
