I. What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that leads to the gradual destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligaments, bone, and cementum of the tooth root. The disease progresses in stages, and if left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, affecting chewing function, aesthetics, and the patient's quality of life.

II. Symptoms of periodontal disease
- Pain: Can be a dull, localized pain caused by tooth mobility or food impaction, or acute pain when there is an abscess around the tooth.
- Gingivitis: Swollen, red gums that bleed easily when touched, with excessive secretion in the gingival pockets, and possible pus.
- Gum recession: When inflamed gum tissue leads to degeneration of the connective tissue.
- Tooth mobility: A result of bone resorption around the tooth and destruction of the periodontal ligament, which may lead to tooth loss.
- Tooth sensitivity: Teeth become sensitive to hot or cold stimuli.
- X-ray images may show bone resorption, tooth displacement, and tooth loss.

III. Is periodontal disease dangerous?
If periodontal disease is not treated promptly, the infection can spread to the alveolar bone, leading to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss.
More seriously, periodontal disease can be a contributing factor to other systemic health issues such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive problems, due to the presence of bacteria and their metabolic products.
Therefore, early treatment of periodontal disease will reduce the risk of complications and ensure the patient’s oral health.

IV. What causes periodontal disease? At what age is periodontal disease most common?
The main cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of bacteria on dental plaque. Other contributing factors include crowded or misaligned teeth, improperly placed dental restorations or fillings, and abnormal tooth root anatomy. Systemic conditions that reduce the body's resistance, such as diabetes, hormonal changes, and immune system deficiencies, can also increase the risk of periodontal disease. Additionally, poor nutrition, stress, and smoking are risk factors for periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease is most common in middle-aged and older adults, but it can affect individuals of all ages. Statistics show that over 60% of people aged 35-45 suffer from periodontal disease.

V. Is the treatment of periodontal disease difficult? What is the treatment process for periodontal disease?
Treatment Methods for Periodontal Disease nhằm mục đích chính là kiểm soát mảng bám và các yếu tố nguy cơ.
Local treatment methods:
- Removal of local irritants: Clean scaling to remove tartar and plaque and smooth the surface of the tooth roots.
- Eliminate Local Risk Factors: Correct improper restorations and fix surface defects on the teeth and roots.
- Anti-inflammatory treatment: Topical medication for inflammation.
- Stimulate and activate the circulation of the tissues surrounding the teeth
Systemic treatment methods:
- Antibiotics: Systemic antibiotics are prescribed for abscesses around the tooth or persistent inflammation.
- Boosting the immune system: Supplement with vitamins B and C.
Surgical treatment:
- Flap surgery: When the periodontal disease is severe and the pocket depth around the tooth is ≥ 5mm, flap surgery is performed. The goal is to access the tooth root surface in the pocket to improve cleaning and reduce or remove the depth of the gum pocket.
- Periodontal regeneration surgery: Aimed at regenerating the soft and hard tissue destroyed after the inflammation has been controlled.
