Do Braces Hurt?
Braces often cause a feeling of tightness or moderate pain. The main reason is the orthodontic tools applying pressure to the teeth and gums to move them into the desired position. However, pain levels vary from person to person depending on their pain threshold and bone structure.
The discomfort usually lasts for 3–7 days after getting braces or each time the wires are adjusted. After that, the body gradually adapts and the pain decreases.

Pain Levels During Each Stage of Braces Treatment
Below is a detailed description of pain levels during different stages of orthodontic treatment:
Stage | Pain Description |
Tooth Separator Placement | When the dentist places separators between the teeth, patients may feel tightness, soreness, and discomfort, especially while chewing. Pain at this stage is usually mild to moderate and can decrease if soft foods are consumed. |
1 Week After Getting Braces | At this stage, people may feel discomfort or irritation from the metal brackets due to not being used to them. In some cases, the inner cheeks may be scratched, especially if not using wax protection. |
Archwire Tightening | Each follow-up visit involves wire tightening or adjustments, which can cause soreness or aching due to shifting pressure. Pain at this stage is usually moderate and lasts 2–3 days after adjustment. |
Power Chain Activation | This is the most painful stage of the entire orthodontic process. Power chain placement and activation often cause soreness due to pressure on the teeth, especially when eating or during daily activities. |
Elastic Replacement | For those using elastics, changing them regularly or during check-ups may also cause slight soreness and discomfort. Pain is typically mild to moderate and lasts 1–2 days after replacement. |
Tooth Extraction for Space Creation | Pain during this stage can range from moderate to high, along with swelling and discomfort in the extraction area. However, the pain usually subsides within 5–7 days and can be managed with medication prescribed by the dentist. |

Effective Ways to Relieve Pain After Braces
To relieve the discomfort or pain caused by braces, you can apply the following methods:
For cases of thermal ulcers or irritation caused by brackets:
- Use orthodontic wax to cover the sharp areas
- Rinse with warm salt water or mouthwash containing Chlorhexidine.
- Supplement vitamins and drink milk, eat soft foods.
- Use prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication as directed by your dentist.
For cases of general jaw pain and muscle tension:
- Massage the jaw area gently.
- Take pain relief medicine as prescribed by your dentist.
Other methods to relieve pain from braces:
- Cold compress: Apply a cold pack to the cheek for about 15–20 minutes to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
- Eat soft foods: During the first days after getting braces or adjustments, choose soft and easy-to-chew foods.
- Avoid hard or sticky foods: Limit hard, sticky, or chewy foods to avoid applying pressure on the teeth and brackets.
